A short documentary to celebrate the achievement of Victor Kibisu, a young man who grew up in Kibera and won a scholarship to do his master's in Data Science in Sydney, Australia.

Foundation of Hope is a youth-based organization residing in Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa. Their objective is to empower children and transform the community for sustainable development. Every week they provide art and dancing classes, and shelter for people in need. They were kind enough to invite me to their center and help to promote their work.

I had the opportunity to shoot a video for Kazuri jewelry brand and learn about their amazing work. Using clay from Mount Kenya, all Kazuri jewelry is handcrafted by local women, providing employment to over forty single mothers.

I started this project to raise awareness for depression, and as a therapy for my friend Nicki. She is fighting with depression for the past few years and the project helped her to communicate her feelings towards her family, friends and society. In many countries depression is still not an open topic, or not treated as an illness. I would like to make people to think and talk about it, to have more and more open discussions. To give a focal point to know what is depression like. My idea for the project was to ask Nicki to paint on an empty white canvas, anything that comes to her mind, stream of consciousness, meanwhile she is talking about her illness and her feelings. I took photos during the painting process and recorded her voice. At the end I took pictures of her in front of the painted canvas. She mentioned many times that there is no exit from depression, I tried to create one for her.
